Frequently asked questions regarding MoldScan™
What is Mold Scan™?
Mold Scan™ is a screening tool for the detection of microbial metabolites known as microbial volatile organic compounds or MVOCs. MVOCs themselves can cause irritation and allergic reactions, but, more importantly, MVOCs are biomarkers for molds that produce toxins that may adversely affect health. For more information see Application Note 523.
How does Mold Scan™ work?
Prism will send upon request a sample tube to you. Collecting a sample on the sample tube will require a personal exposure pump (200ml/min flow rate). For specific sampling instructions refer to Tech Bulletin 524.
Does Mold Scan™ have the ability to detect bacteria, both from the air and surfaces?
The MVOC compounds we monitor using MoldScan™ were specifically selected to detect actively growing mold. They were also specifically chosen to avoid interference from bacterial growth. In short, it is not effective in detecting bacterial growth.
In answer to your second question, Prism specializes in the determination of volatile compounds in the air. The determination of the presence of bacteria in the air and on surfaces is best handled using a mycology laboratory.
How do I interpret my results?
Prism provides Tech Bulletin 525 with each lab report that explains how to interpret your results.
