Prism Analytical has developed CDScan™, an innovative air scanning technology that will assist homeowners and building contractors to determine the presence of contaminated Chinese drywall in a home or business. Any dwelling in the U.S. that has been built or remodeled within the past 5 years has a probability of the existence of defective drywall.
The problem is a result of the failure to remove sulfur and other contaminants from synthetic gypsum during the drywall manufacturing process. Complaints from homes affected with the contaminated drywall range from unpleasant sulfur odors in the home or office, metals turning black, sudden electrical or appliance failure, and respiratory distress.
Prism has received numerous requests from our professional clients for an affordable test that will detect the presence of this contaminated drywall. To address these needs, scientists at Prism developed CDScan. CDScan is a two-part test that combines:
- Air test collected on Prism’s standard collection thermal desorption tubes which looks for the sulfur compounds known to be present in homes and businesses containing this drywall.
- SEM-EDS analysis, an X-ray technology, that allows Prism to observe sulfur damage on air conditioning coils. The sample is collected as a tape lift from the affected coil and analyzed by our SEM-EDS technique.

From the data collected, a probability index is given to the professional conducting the test that suggests the level of probability that contaminated drywall is present in the structure.
